"Florida face-biter" Avoids Jail

I stumbled upon this news story for the first time, even though the crime occurred in 2016 and the pandemic delayed the case several years, which could be why the sentencing isn't being talked about much. However, the case is a pretty bizarre one, so I'm a little surprised to be hearing about it for the first time. There are a number of news outlets writing articles about it, but I hadn't heard about it from peers or on Twitter; my "news outlet" of choice. The issue is that a former college student, Austin Harrouff, pled not guilty and will be committed to a mental institution after killing John and Michelle Mishcon Stevens. The bizarre part of the crime was that Harrouff was biting off pieces of John Stevens face when the police found him.

To contextualize the crime a bit more: Harrouff "stormed off in anger" while he was at dinner at a local restaurant with his parents. His mother called 911 to warn the authorities that he was acting strangely. Claiming he was fleeing from a demon named "Daniel", Harrouff, after stripping, ended up in the Stevens' garage and drank chemicals they had. Police arrived at the scene to find that Harrouff had killed the couple with tools he had found in the garage.

Family members were angered with the sentencing, seeing his being committed to a mental institution as a "slap on the wrist' according to Mason Mishcon, Michelle's brother. As someone who is the most impacted by the crime, you can't expect them to feel that Harrouff got the sentence he deserved, but psychiatrists concluded he suffered an acute psychotic episode during the attack, backing his insanity plea.

  1. Hi Alejandra,
I have seen a YouTube documentary about this case and bizarre is putting it lightly. A seemingly normal college guy looses his mind and begins ripping people apart with his teeth goes past the normal "Florida man" stories stories we hear. It is news to me that the case finally went to trial. It is disheartening to hear he pled not guilty as that does not seem right. He was literally caught in the act! However, I am not surprised by the insanity plea either. I hope that some good comes of this so we never have to hear of this man's name again.

  2. Hi Alejandra!
I myself have not heard anything about this! Insane news! I've been focusing so hard on politics and Georgia's run-off senate election that I think I've missed out on several non-political news stories.
These types of cases are always difficult and I can't imagine being a person having to decide whether or not this person should go too prison for their crimes or be sent to an institution for psychiatric help. Crazy world we live in today.
    Great post!
